There is a dizzying array of dietary plans out that can aid weight loss and it can be hard to know where to start. If you want to “kickstart” weight loss, calorie restricted diets can help, advised Dr Amir Khan on Channel 5’s Lose a Stone in 4 weeks for summer. The fast 800 diet is one of the most effective calorie restricted diets if you want to lose weight quickly, he explained.

There is an important reason why diets such as the Fast 800 do not maintain the low-calorie approach.

Although very low calorie diets are an effective way to lose weight quickly, they are not advisable in the long-run, warned Dr Amir.

“Very low calorie diets should only be followed under medical supervision for a maximum of 12 weeks,” advises the NHS.

Although very low calorie diets can lead to short term weight loss, it is likely that the weight will come back on after the diet ends, notes the health body.

Dietary decisions to avoid

Following an unhealthy diet contributes to weight gain and there are specific culprits to avoid.

“A diet that’s high in calories, lacking in fruits and vegetables, full of fast food, and laden with high-calorie beverages and oversized portions contributes to weight gain,” warns the Mayo Clinic.

Liquid calories can also contribute to weight gain without you realising.

The Mayo Clinic explains: “People can drink many calories without feeling full, especially calories from alcohol.”

It adds: “Other high-calorie beverages, such as sugared soft drinks, can contribute to significant weight gain.”

In addition to eating well, regular exercise help you manage your weight.

“Guidelines recommend that we take as much opportunity as we can to be active,” explains Bupa.

“Adults should aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity over the course of the week.”
