Readers say a give attention to look isn’t the one possibility for older girls in the present day.

I was surprised by “Polishing the Silver” (Thursday Kinds, Could 16), describing how rich girls over 80 spend their money and time on the pursuit of youth via elaborate clothes, make-up and numerous magnificence remedies. However there are a lot of kinds of rising previous, not all of them targeted on look.
The article implies that the one various to those girls’s selections is to “shuffle, unkempt and neglected,” into previous age. Quite the opposite, many ladies over 80 lead vibrant, lively lives, persevering with their customary work, pursuits and relationships and contributing to the frequent good. Nor do they shuffle or seem unkempt.
Why not select to spotlight these exemplary girls as a substitute, or a minimum of embrace them as properly?

If the most important drawback these girls are coping with is getting their make-up on for a night out, they will think about themselves extraordinarily fortunate.
Most of us in our 80s are dealing with unwell well being in its numerous devastating guises. We face the diminution of our selves, as we see frailty rob us of the competencies and capabilities we’ve got relied on all our lives.
What issues isn’t that we glance previous however that we are previous. Actuality can’t be obliterated with designer garments and make-up.

The majority of ladies over 80 should not dwelling in costly senior housing. We’re sustaining our personal households and taking part in civic affairs. Now we have the vitality and the will to serve the wants in our communities: spiritual, charitable, political and social.
We’re most more likely to be discovered sporting athleisure garments and sunscreen moderately than fringed vests and gold necklaces. Largely we do that alone, companions misplaced to loss of life or divorce. And sure, we learn The New York Occasions!
